What to Bring

cameraWhen visiting the gorgeous natural terrains of the Texas Hill Country, don't forget to bring these items!

Camera – With so many picturesque landscapes in the Texas Hill Country, you will find photo opportunities everywhere you turn. Make sure you have plenty of film or digital memory space to capture the moment.

Canteen – Staying hydrated is vital to any hill country getaway. Be sure to bring as much water as you can comfortably carry.  Depending on the length of your hike, you should bring at least three quarts per person, per day. Leave at least a gallon of water in your vehicle so that you’ll have a fresh water supply upon your return.

Snacks – Healthy meals are essential to sustain yourself on your trip. Consider a European-style lunch with bread, cheese, hard meats, and fruit that doesn’t require refrigeration. Of course, energy bars are always a reliable source of relatively long-lasting sustenance.

Sunscreen – Lather on generous amounts of sunscreen with an SPF of no less than 30. As easy as it is to prevent sun damage, it is simply impractical not to take the proper measures.

Reliable footwear – It is never a good idea to bring new shoes on a hike. Bring a comfortable pair of hiking boots or athletic shoes that have been properly broken in, and couple it with high-quality socks that will withstand the mileage.

Bathing suit – Central Texas is a veritable treasure trove of natural lakes, rivers, creeks, and springs that are perfect for taking a refreshing dip after a fulfilling hike. Be prepared to fully enjoy a rejuvenating escape that Mother Nature provides.

Bug repellent – We have to share our beautiful hill country with plenty of creepy crawlers with toxins that are harmful to our health. Show them they are not welcome by liberally applying bug repellent to clothing, paying special attention to your shoes and socks.

Trash bags – Be sure to keep nature as beautiful as you find it. Take your waste back with you, and keep it far way from trails and water sources.
