Chef Carlos Garcia of Sullivan’s Steakhouse- A Passion for Cooking by Risa Punzalan
Growing up, Executive Chef Carlos I. Garcia wanted to be either a fireman or a chef. Luckily for Austin and Sullivan’s Steakhouse, he possesses a passion for cooking. He always enjoyed helping his mother and grandmother cook the traditional dishes of Mexico, the land of his birth, as a child raised in Tucson, Arizona. Throughout his culinary career, Chef Carlos has worked at the Hilton and other high-class restaurants. He became a sous chef at Sullivan’s Steakhouse in Tucson, Arizona. Two years ago, he was promoted to executive chef here at Austin’s own Sullivan’s Steakhouse. As a chef, Chef Carlos’ home cooking is very different from the fast-paced world of a restaurant. He enjoys making pizza with his children, right down to the homemade crust. The best tip he can give other home cooks is to shop seasonally and try to buy the freshest fruits and vegetables possible, just like a restaurant. Also, seasoning properly while cooking is the key to making any dish successful. He also impresses among others to have an open mind towards all cuisines and cultures. Sullivan’s Steakhouse, according to Chef Carlos, is very high energy. It possesses the perfect atmosphere for any visitor or local Austinite that has been busy shopping, working, or exploring. The restaurant also has delectable steaks made from only USDA selected beef. The martini selection is also excellent. Also, all Sullivan’s Steakhouse locations have been awarded he Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence from 2000 – 2008. The event Swingin’ at Sully’s, which provides live jazz music, occurs every Thursday and Sunday at Sullivan’s Steakhouse.
